Twitter Logo and Brand cheat sheet from @typohunter

Many of my IBM colleagues participate in Twitter. More importantly, many of my IBM Marketing colleagues use Twitter as a branded communication channel to our constituents. However, recently Twitter changed their logo and brand policies. These have a significant impact on how marketers represent and use Twitter in our web, collateral and other content marketing activities. And as a marketer, I'm acutely aware of why this is important and want to support their efforts. After all, as an IBM marketer, I wouldn't want anyone to misuse the IBM brand.

I recently attended a monthly Social Media Club San Diego chat which focused on this specific topic. I thought I would share with you what I learned. The summary was pulled together by Kari Embree, so thank her for the great distillation!

Twitter Logo and Brand Cheat Sheet

Twitter's marks include, but are not limited to, the Twitter name, logo, Tweet, Twitter bird, and any word, phrase, image, or other designation that identifies the source or origin of any of Twitter's products.

General Do's:
  • Use one of the official Twitter buttons as a link to your account online.
  • Capitalize the T in Twitter and Tweet.
  • Write out "Follow Us on Twitter" with your @username when you're unable to show the Twitter bird.
  • Make sure that if mentioning "Tweet", you include a direct reference to Twitter (for instance, "Tweet with Twitter") or display the Twitter brand or trademarks with the mention of "Tweet".

General Don'ts:
  • Create your own unique buttons or images using Twitter's logos.
  • Use Twitter in the name of your website, application or product.
  • Use Twitter marks in your avatar or the background of your Twitter page.
  • Use just "Tweet" or "Tweet" with a simple letter or number combination (for example, 1Tweet, Tweet, Tweets).
  • Register a domain containing Twitter, misspellings, transliterations, or similar variations thereof.
  • Use Tweet in the name of your application if used with any other service.

Twitter bird do's:
  • Use an official, unmodified Twitter bird graphic (available in EPS/PNG for light/dark/blue/white backgrounds).
  • Make sure the Twitter bird faces right.
Twitter bird don'ts:
  • Use speech bubbles or words around the Twitter brand
  • Duplicate, rotate/change direction of, or animate the Twitter bird
  • Change the color of the Twitter bird
Book/Publication do's:
  • Make sure the title of your book or publication makes clear that it's ABOUT Twitter, and not BY Twitter. For example, "Learning how to 'X" on Twitter" is appropriate, whereas "The Twitter Guide to 'X'" is not.
Book/Publications don'ts:
  • Use the Twitter bird on your cover or in your title
  • Use the word Tweet to refer to services other than Twitter
  • Note: Twitter generally does not permit use of their marks on merchandise and manufactured items.
